Last Wednesday, my brother (who also took the photos below) accompanied me to Local Mission Eatery for their monthly wine dinner. Held at the end of each month, LME collaborates with local winemakers and produces a menu of centered around pairings. July’s winemaker was Sutton Cellars. The result was tasty food and quirky wines, all at a pretty reasonable price ($36 for a three course prix fixe and $15 for the wine pairing).

The Eatery, which has been open for a little over a year in a space formerly occupied by Alhambra Halal Meat Co., is located in an allegedly less trendy part of the Mission, at the intersection of Folsom. The interior is narrow but fairly expansive, with a great bar space for eating solo or with a partner. The service was fabulous – friendly and attentive – and the winemaker made the rounds for each pour, a font of useful information.

Like many San Francisco restaurants, it’s riding the locavore trend, but unlike many places, LME universally sources from local producers. And the result is delicious.
The meal began with an unusual aperitif – white vermouth and soda. Alas, it wasn’t the most potable of beverages and neither of us were compelled to finish it. Our first course, on the other hand, was a refreshing melon and green tomato salad and served as a nice palate cleanser. The accompanying sparkling rosé was delightful, although the bouquet was reminiscent of yeast and threw off the experience a bit.

The second dish, squid braised in red wine, was wonderful. The beans provided a great texture contrast and the red “jug wine” proved to be a perfect accompaniment.

The main dish, a pork bolognese with cavatelli, was my least favorite of them all. While tasty, the texture suggested more cooking time was needed.

Overall, I highly recommend LME and it’s monthly wine dinner. I will definitely be going back for seconds.
